The Highlands Wilderness Training Institute was founded to provide those who play and work in the great outdoors a cost effective way to gain valuable training in Wilderness First Aid, Urban First Aid & CPR and Wilderness Survival Skills.

Every year thousands of families and individuals head out of the big city for the weekend commute, to the cottage and into the wilderness to enjoy such activities as camping, fishing, hunting, hiking and much much more.

Unfortunately along with these fun recreational activities comes the increased risk of injury or the chance of becoming lost or stranded in the woods. With this in mind HWTI was founded by a group of professionals who are used to seeing what happens when people who are unprepared to deal with emergencies find themselves experiencing one first hand in the back country.

Our instructional staff consists of paramedics, nurses, firefighters and search & rescue team members all of whom posses real world experience dealing with actual emergencies that have occurred in both big city & wilderness settings.

These are the same people who come to your rescue when you call 911.

Our instructors have the ability to effectively pass valuable knowledge and skills on to you in a manner that is easy to understood through the use of state of the art technology and following accepted adult education methods.

We invite you to browse through our website, and please feel free to contact us with any inquires you may have.

Sincerely Yours

NEWS & EVENTS

2 Students successfully complete their Basic Wilderness Survival course as temperatures unexpentantly drop to -37'C overnight.

The Highlands Wilderness Training Institute would like to congratulate Melissa & Rob for showing great determination in successfully completing their basic wilderness survival course as the overnight temperatures plummeted well below expected values. After spending a day learning basic survival skills to better prepare them for their love of outdoor winter activities these two survivors are living proof that when equipped with determination, proper training and a few simple items, it is possible to deal with the unexpected when it happens. Great Job Guys summer camping will be a breeze from now on.

Ski Patroller makes the journey to HWTI from Montreal

Tanya, an avid Ski Patroller from Montreal recently came to HWTI for a brush up on her wilderness medical skills.  Thinking there are always little people on the slopes we figured this would be a good oppourtunity to call upon our youngest Co-Instructor to help us out for the day. Great Job Tanya !!!

The Highlands Wilderness Training Institute will once again be sending instructors to Canada's Sub Arctic Region

Instructors from HWTI will once again be heading North to the James Bay region to provide Advanced Wilderess First Aid Training for the Cree First Nations.

Moosonee has a subarctic climate generally featuring long cold winters and short warm summers, with James Bay acting as a thermal reservoir to moderate and skew spring and fall temperatures. Freeze-up on the Moose River normally occurs in late October or early November, with mean daily minimum January temperatures approximately −30 °C (−22 °F).

The community was the site of a fur trading post set up in 1903 by Revillon Freres, competitors to the Hudson's Bay Company which later bought out Revillon. Moosonee is inaccessible by road. The nearest road outside of Moosonee ends at Otter Rapids, Ontario which is south of Moosonee.

During the winter, ice roads are plowed and maintained on the ice across the Moose River to Moose Factory and to the coastal communities of Fort Albany, Kashechewan and Attawapiskat.

In recent years, much of the traffic heading up north has been destined for the Victor Diamond Mine operated by De Beers Canada to the west of Attawapiskat.

`This course was excellent value for the money. I learned a hell of a lot and thanks to the scenarios, I built my confidence by a lot. Thinking ahead to an upcoming 7-day trek, I have a lot of new knowledge to help me cope on the trail. I also really liked the easy going yet demanding approach and personalities of Scott, Dee & Colleagues"

`The course was a great experience, it is different from any first aid course I have ever taken, because it allowed you to deal with real situations in a hands on way. I think I will remember more info from this course than any other book or course I have learned from in the past. Scott deviates from typical first aid training and gives many tips as he tries to give the most realistic experience he can"

" I just completed the Standard First Aid with Level C-CPR/AED with Scott and Deanna. In my 30+ years of taking these types of courses, this is truly the first one that I have enjoyed the most. Very hands on, very interactive. The trainers are very experienced and know what they are talking about! Many thanks"!

Wilderness EVENT MEDIC SERVICES

Scott and his crew, Deanna, Boris, Tammy and Gary from Highlands Wilderness Training Institute were in for an easy day…well okay easy until about 7pm at night! We want to extend a huge thank you to Scott and the crew for managing any and all levels of injury during the race and into the evening. More on these guys at the bottom of this letter…

SEARCH AND RESCUE:
Well this list could basically take up the entire staff and volunteers – but let me give you a breakdown of what occurred once we realized that three teams were off in the woods watching for fire flies and the moon rise.
Bonnie, and Scott:
These two drove the boat around and around looking along the water’s edge. Bonnie spotted a tiny light along the shore and booted it to the last spot she saw the light. With a lot of whistling and yelling – team 207 was located making their way along the edge of bark Lake (with what turned out to be a teeny, tiny flashlight). These guys were very happy to see our rescue team. One down and one to go. Nice work eagle eyes Bonnie.

Scott was calm, cool (well cold most of the time) and collected. It always pays to work with qualified people and Scott certainly knew what he was doing. As the search for 272 wore on, Scott became our liaison with the outside OPP. It was looking like we were going to have to call in the big guns if we didn’t find team 272 soon. Now, from a race director’s experience – Mark, Sean and I know that teams almost always get lost. We did not want to have to start the process of a full-scale search and rescue (costly, timely and not so effective when we had a good idea where the team probably was). We just kept eliminating possibilities about where the team could be and kept on searching. Scott was so incredibly helpful with this process – we hope you will come back each year!
